Move More Month!

April is Move More Month! If you haven’t pledged to move more this month, all is not lost. There is still one week left, and I am going to share some suggestions to get you moving this final week. But don’t just leave it in April. Keep moving!

On your mark, sync your fitness trackers and go!

Pets are such great motivators for getting in extra steps. Grab the leash and take them for a stroll every day before or after work. Get a step closer to meeting your 10,000-step goal by parking in a spot farther from building entrances and exits. Thinking the workplace is no place for exercise? Contrary to popular perception, work is a great place to move more. Trade in escalator missteps and awkward elevator silence for an invigorating stair climb. Take a break from those working lunches. Ask a co-worker to join you for a brisk walk after you’ve eaten. Include an extra challenge adding stairs to your route.

Gym memberships can be financially overwhelming.

Luckily the gym isn’t the only place where the magic can happen. Your home is perfect for your movement needs. Remove the clothes from that treadmill, elliptical or stationary bike, and get on it! Reposition your equipment to use while you watch your favorite show for 30 minutes to an hour. If you prefer to sit while you watch television, grab a couple of weights, and do arm exercises during the full length of commercial breaks. You can also walk in place. Then rest during commercials.

No equipment. No problem.

Let’s put those good intentions to use by doing some 7-minute HITT workouts. These are ideal for those of us who want to routinely exercise but lack the time or resources to join a gym. There are apps like 7 Minute Workout you can download to a device, or you can search for workouts on the internet. There are tons of free videos on YouTube.  If you love music, turn on a playlist that speaks to your hips and dance! Line dancing is a fun way to get moving. Put the ones you know on repeat and/or learn new ones. Double up on the fun times by inviting the rest of your household to join you. Whether roughing it alone or in good company, just move!
